In my experience as a senior photographer, I’ve heard of A LOT of different scenarios based on WHO people choose to hire for their senior portraits. Some stories have happy endings and others… well, let’s just say their previous experience is what eventually led them to me.
Your school may even tell you to go to the recommended photographer, yet you want to be different and unique. Ready for THE TRUTH? Here it is! You can go anywhere you want to for your Yearbook picture and everything else.
So, who COULD you hire to take your senior photos?
These are options that I’ve either heard of people using, seen people using, or know of from other resources. Let’s look at the options. The facts and the experiences I’ve heard about.
SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHER – More than likely this is a national company with no local ties to the community, and has no creativity. You may have to stand in line like a factory in the school gym. And, honestly, you probably won’t have many options for backdrops or locations. You’ll have to settle for what they have set up that day. Nothing to show off your personality. In my professional opinion, you should skip the school photographer.
THE FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER – I’m going to just come right out and say it. This is almost ALWAYS a nightmare! Usually this person has little to no experience with posing, professional lighting or retouching skills. It might be a cheap option . . . but really? Don’t you want someone to photograph you with the professional skills and experience to make you look your very best?
THE INSTAGRAM PHOTOGRAPHER (AKA THE “MOM-TOGRAPHER”) – This is usually how this person got started – One day they went to Best Buy and bought a fancy camera. They next made an Instagram/Facebook page and uploaded some pictures of friends they took in the back yard. This is when the “you get what you paid for” . . really comes true. Much like the friend mentioned about they typically have little to no experience and often they don’t even know how to use that fancy camera off auto mode. (Don’t even get me started on this one.)
THE WEEKEND ENTREPRENEUR – This person usually has a Full time job in another field other than photography. They are looking for a quick buck . . so they start a photography business. Could the photos turn out good? Possibly. But, again, you get what you pay for. Would you trust your upcoming root canal to someone who works a desk job during the week and advertises cheap dental work on the weekends? Or would you go to the dentist who own his own dental office, carries insurance, and all the license and accreditation needed to really perform the work safely and expertly (and legally)?
